Google Cloud Study-Jam Workshop
As part of a new community initiative, on February 23rd 2019, a google cloud workshop was held at QU administration building.
The Department of Computer Science and engineering faculty member Eng. Abdulahi Hassen, the Computing Club students and
Google Developers Group in Doha organized the workshop. The workshop was open to all the university students and the
community in Doha. More than 60 people registered for the workshop.
In the workshop, the Google Developers Group (GDG) team
came and presented three distinct talks to the participants. The
first talk focused on the current trends in technology. The GDG
team discussed the state of the art algorithms, cloud, IoT, and
big data. Then the GDG team presented a talk on “how to be
a good leader” to help the participants gain leadership skills.
Finally, the GDG team presented two technical study jams
for the attendees. The first study jam focused on an
introductory-level quest. Participants got hands-on practice
with the Google Cloud Platform’s fundamental tools and
services. The attendees learned how to create virtual
machine instances of various machine types using the
Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Console and using
the gcloud command line. They also learned how to connect
an NGINX web server to their virtual machine.
In the second study jam, the participants were introduced to Docker, an
open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications. In the
study jam, the participants learned how they could build, run, and debug
Docker containers. Also, they learned how they could pull Docker images
from Docker Hub and Google Container Registry.
The workshop gave the participants the skills they can use for personal
development or career advancement. The participants also received
access to google online labs(worth 55$+) for free.
