On Tuesday 16/1/2018, Dr. Sumaya Al Maaded arranged for a
workshop called Deep Learning, under the umbrella of her NPRP
project. The presenter was Dr. Arif Mahmoud who is a post Doc. in
the project. This workshop was managed for graduate students,
research assistants and senior faculty for improving understanding
of the fundamentals of deep learning algorithms. At the core of deep
learning are Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). In the
workshop, the participants got hands-on experience of optimizing
Fully Connected Neural Networks (FCNN) and Convolutional
Neural Networks (CNN) on a class-room example. One pass of
forward propagation and one pass of backward propagation was
manually performed by the participants. Implementations of both
FCNN and CNN were discussed in Matlab and example code was
executed step-by-step for clear understanding on MINST
handwritten digits dataset. The workshop acted as foundation for
researchers working in deep learning areas and it will open new
horizons in the emerging areas of deep learning.
